My Neptunian Lover [A Science-Fiction(ish) Song From the 70s]

A gem from the 1970s: My Neptunian Lover. In Turkey, Alpay, a famous singer within the country’s borders, performed the song “My Neptunian Lover” together with a group called Grup A (whom I don’t know at all) on the TV show Sihirli Lamba (The Magic Lamp), which was broadcast on Turkey’s Radio and Television Corporation channel (TRT 1) in the 1970s. The song was aired only once, exclusively on this program. In this piece, as the title suggests, the singer expresses his love for an alien woman from Neptune. The program was broadcast in 1979.

The song reminds me of the crazy science fiction comic books from the 1930s, where intelligent aliens and strange creatures roamed even the planets of the solar system. Of course, the song is quite outdated from a scientific perspective; by 1979, we already knew that there was no life on the planets of the solar system – let alone advanced alien beings.

Alpay and Group A: My Neptunian Lover [1979]

Here are the lyrics to this incredible song:

A bright light brought her from space to Earth
The moment I saw her, I fell in love with her angelic face

No matter which language I spoke, ah, she doesn’t understand me
And she keeps moving her antennas constantly

Wait, don’t run away from me, beautiful woman, I love you
[This part is sung in English] I want you, I love you

From Jupiter, or from Neptune, where did you descend to Earth from, I don’t know
[The alien woman mumbles something in an incomprehensible, made-up alien language]
…you say, but I don’t understand your language at all

No matter which language I spoke, ah, she doesn’t understand me
And she keeps moving her antennas constantly

[This part is sung in English] I need you, I want you, I love you

As the days passed by, my lover suddenly withered and faded
She couldn’t withstand this Earth’s atmosphere, I don’t know why
Whether to Uranus, whether to Neptune
My love, wait, I’m coming with you
Wait, don’t go, wait

[This part is sung in English] I want you, and I love you

[The alien woman mumbles something incomprehensible, but finally, she says in Turkish]
I love you!

[Alpay also mumbles something in the made-up alien language]
Finally, she learned Turkish, and I learned Neptunian
Now I’m very happy, with my lover, forever, on Neptune!
